A natural black hair color formulation using plant-based and mineral ingredients that provide deep, lasting pigmentation, conditioning, and scalp nourishment without synthetic chemicals.

Ingredients (for ~100 g)

  1. Henna (Lawsonia inermis) powder – 40 g
    • Natural dye base; conditions hair and improves texture.
  2. Indigo (Indigofera tinctoria) powder – 40 g
    • Provides deep blue-black pigment when applied over henna.
  3. Amla (Emblica officinalis) powder – 10 g
    • Fixes color, adds shine, and prevents premature greying.
  4. Coffee or Black Tea decoction (strong brew) – ~100 mL
    • Enhances depth of black tones; adds antioxidants.
  5. Beetroot powder or Hibiscus powder – 5 g
    • Improves color adherence, adds subtle undertone and luster.
  6. Fenugreek seed powder – 3 g
    • Improves scalp health, increases hair color penetration.
  7. Eucalyptus oil or Rosemary oil – 4–5 drops
    • Improves longevity of color, promotes hair growth, adds fragrance.

Preparation Method

Step 1: Henna Base Paste

  1. Take henna powder (40 g) in a glass/ceramic bowl.
  2. Add freshly brewed black tea/coffee decoction (lukewarm) gradually to make a smooth paste.
  3. Add amla powder and fenugreek powder; mix well.
  4. Cover the bowl and let the mixture rest for 6–8 hours (preferably overnight) for dye release.

Step 2: Indigo Paste

  1. Just before application, take indigo powder (40 g) in another non-metallic bowl.
  2. Mix with lukewarm water to form a thick paste.
  3. Add hibiscus/beetroot powder to intensify binding and shine.
  4. Mix thoroughly and use immediately (do not keep for long).

Step 3: Combination & Application

  1. Mix the prepared henna paste and indigo paste in equal proportions (1:1) for deep black color.
    • For darker jet-black tones → increase indigo ratio slightly.
    • For softer brown-black → increase henna ratio.
  2. Add 4–5 drops of essential oil (eucalyptus/rosemary).
  3. Apply evenly on clean, dry hair from roots to tips using a brush or gloved hands.
  4. Cover hair with a shower cap to retain moisture.

Step 4: Development & Rinse

  1. Leave the mixture on hair for 2–3 hours.
  2. Rinse thoroughly with plain water (avoid shampoo for 48 hours).
  3. Use a mild, sulfate-free shampoo only after 2 days.

Important Notes for Longevity

  • Amla + henna + indigo synergy locks color and prevents premature fading.
  • Using black tea/coffee helps extend the depth of black color.
  • Avoid oiling hair for 24 hours post-application for better fixation.
  • Repeat once every 4–6 weeks for sustained results.
